Booyah 55, DIAMOND CUTTERS 45

Last night saw the re-emergence of the Cutters of old, and for those there watching it was a night they’ll always remember and look back on with pride, saying to themselves, “I was there.” There was magic in the air and in a high scoring ‘Showtime’ game, although ‘Booyah’ emerged the eventual winners, the Cutters were by far the most glamorous. The loud and loyal DC Fan Club were out in full force, with the players on the receiving end. If not for such a crowd, the scoreline could spell an entirely different story.

With pom-poms and posters, the cheer squad shouted inspiring chants, such as

            “Yo Yo, he’s our man,

If he can’t do it, no one can!”

“O poor Dave, what a shame,

            Better luck next game!”

            “Scott, what

            Good but bland

Cos’ he don’t wear no headband!”

Posters were held high, desperate young women pleading for their men’s hands in marriage. Despite the rampant rumours about celebrity courtside couple our own ‘Toyota’ Tim and Alexa (is it on, is it off?), there’s been no word on any acceptance or confirmation.

Despite Tim and Wong being last minute withdrawals, the crowd’s spirits were not dampened. The importance of a strong and vocal crowd was highlighted again, as the Cutters blitzed at the start and were full of energy. However, the absence of any fitness coach at the Cutters let the team down in the end, when they just could not keep up with the fresh legs of ‘Booyah’.

The Cutters own Ben, undoubted guard of the league, has to be commended for his efforts in making it to the game, despite other commitments and looking very much in doubt for the match. His brilliant efforts were much needed, with 1 guard K-Ep having a less than best performance. Ben’s efforts in the backcourt secured him the game’s co-MVP award, sharing it with ‘The Cat’ Yoch. Ben had 12 points and almost a double-double coupled with his assists, while ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Yoch was good for 17 points on his left hand and a strong defensive effort, setting up the Cutters first half.

Dave stroked a three pointer early, the shot we grew to know and love last season, as well as raking up a few steals down the other end, going for 5 points and a great game. Scott was also excellent, scoring 11 points, the crowd soccer chanting ‘head---band’, just as in the Premier League.

The DC team missed big man Tim in the blockhole, and the extra scoring power provided by J-Wong, however, if a less than full strength team can be this damaging, imagine what the Cutters can do next week, at full strength, full stride, with both Tim and Wong back in the lineup. We’ll just have to wait and see next Monday night, as the Cutters take on F.A.T. at 9:45pm.

The Cutters game this week will be remembered in history, with highlights provided by Ben ‘J-Will’ style, Yochie ‘Franchise’ and Scott, sure to be seen on highlight reels nationwide and for years to come.

‘Nick from Adelaide’, as promised, did his version of a Spencer Tunick photo or artistic nude, in full and graceful flight across the court, before his free ride to the iron cage.
