Wake Forest 47, DIAMOND CUTTERS 24

With ‘the Rifleman’ Yochem, Wong and Dave out through injury, acting captain Kepler Schumann was left at the helm. The most improved player from last year would again need to step up a notch from last season if the Cutters were to be any chance, and step up he did. The burly 2-guard took his game to Wake Forest, slicing and dicing, shakin’ and bakin’, and killing with a crossover learnt from team friend Baron Davis from their Melbourne excursion. ‘Mighty Mouse’ Kepler had an outstanding performance for 12 points, including two 3-pointers and one huge block on a break, taking home a well-earned MVP award.

However, his performance was not enough as the Cutters could not hold down the league leading Forest, losing 47-24.

The most inexperienced Cutters team ever fielded showed promise but could not capitalise on it.

Coming off the record-breaking game of last week, the Cutters almost broke their own record for blocked shots in a game for a team. In one memorable piece of play, Scott scored off the fast break, and 1, but was bogusly called for travel. An angry ‘Long Arm of the Law’ Scott, now in defence, blocked the next four Forest shots.

Tim Vanderbom had an excellent first half, standing out in both offence and defence, going for four points, and numerous blocked shots and rebounds.

Last year’s rookie of the year Evan Schumann combined well with his brother at point, also hitting a big three-pointer.

A hologram of rookie Stephen Wootton was displayed on court as an effective decoy for the Cutters. The 'Praying Mantis' looks like a good pick-up for the Cutters, plagued by recent injuries to star players.

The Cutters will not be playing next week due to the public holiday. Season tickets are still available at special discounted prices, but for a limited time only.
